Welcome to Base 5

Welcome, families, to the start of an exciting and important school year!

We’re Mrs Fen and Mrs Dougan, and we’re delighted to welcome your child to our class. We’re looking forward to supporting them through an important stage of their education as they prepare for exams, explore their options for college and develop the skills they need for life beyond school.

This year will be about much more than academic progress. We’ll be working together to build confidence, independence and resilience, while developing important life skills and encouraging every student to recognise their strengths and potential.

With exams and future choices ahead, communication and teamwork will be key to helping our students succeed. We want our classroom to be a positive, supportive environment where everyone feels valued, encouraged and able to achieve their best.

We’re excited to see the progress our students make this year and to help them take their next steps towards adulthood, further education and the wider world.

Curriculum Highlights - Autumn 1

English: An Inspector Calls - J.B Priestley: Students follow the Birling family as they are questioned by Inspector Goole about the death of Eva Smith. As each character reveals their involvement, students explore ideas of responsibility, fairness and the consequences of people's actions.

Step up to English: Students will develop the skills they need to read and understand a range of texts as well as to write clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures.

Science : In science, Base 5 are studying Biology - the current topic is cells and microscopy. - here they learn the structure and function of organelles found in animal and plant cells; how some cells are specialised for specific roles in the body; the structure and function of light microscopes; how to prepare and observe cells under a light microscope; organisation and function of the human body and organ systems.

Maths: Our current maths focus covers numbers, calculating, shapes, measuring, time, data handling. We are building strong numerical foundations by counting in both directions, spotting number patterns, mastering basic addition and subtraction, and learning to explain our problem-solving methods. In geometry, we are identifying 2D and 3D shapes, exploring their properties like faces and corners, finding them in our environment, and studying position, direction, and symmetry. Additionally, we are exploring measurement by comparing lengths, weights, and capacities. Our work on time involves reading clocks, sequencing daily events, and understanding intervals like days, weeks, and months. Finally, we are introducing data handling by collecting information, organising it into simple charts and pictograms, and answering questions about our findings.

Computing: In computing, B5 are focussing on online safety. Pupils learn about how to keep data private, what data should and should not be shared publicly, what the risks of unsecured data could be, how to avoid online scams.

Options: Our Year 10 and 11 students actively participate in specialised options groups designed to build practical life skills, confidence, and independence outside the traditional classroom. This dynamic programme includes hands-on pathways like Childcare, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), Sports & Fitness, Performing Arts, Music, Catering and Outdoor Education. By stepping into these collaborative environments, students develop vital, transferable qualities such as teamwork, creative problem-solving, resilience, and leadership
