Recent Highlights - Autumn 1

English: This term our focus will be a poppies animation.  Learning around this theme is  designed to support every student in developing essential communication skills.  Students will explore letters, sounds, and vocabulary to build confidence in reading and writing. Students will practise constructing sentences, understanding grammar, and expressing ideas clearly. Through guided reading, writing, and speaking activities, students develop the skills to communicate their thoughts with confidence. At the heart is  sharing ideas, feelings, and information. We encourage speaking, listening, and understanding in real-life contexts, helping students use language effectively to interact with others and engage with the world around them.

Maths:  This term in maths the students will be covering measure, time, and shape through hands-on activities that make learning meaningful and fun.Students learn to compare and explore lengths, heights, weights, and capacities. Practical activities like weighing objects, measuring with rulers, and filling containers help make abstract concepts real.Time: Children develop an understanding of days, weeks, hours, and minutes. Through daily routines, clocks, and simple time-based activities, they learn to recognise the passage of time and sequence events.
Shape: Students explore 2D and 3D shapes, their properties, and patterns. Using everyday objects, play, and drawing, children gain a practical understanding of shapes and how they appear in the world around them.

Science:   In our Science lessons, we will learn all about light. We will discover that light helps us to see the world around us and explore different light sources such as the sun, lamps, torches, and candles.  We will undertake hands-on experiments to see how light travels in straight lines and how shadows are made when something blocks the light. We also will use mirrors to reflect light and make it change direction!  Everyone will work together to explore bright and dark, transparent and opaque materials, and talk about how light helps us stay safe.

ICT:  In our upcoming ICT lessons, pupils will be exploring how to create and edit digital pictures using simple computer programs and apps. They will learn how to use tools such as brushes, shapes, and colours to make their own artwork on screen. The children will enjoy experimenting with different styles, adding text, and combining images to express their ideas creatively.  This topic will help develop fine motor skills, creativity, and confidence using technology. Pupils will also learn important ICT skills such as saving and opening files, using a mouse or touchscreen, and making choices about design and colour. We are looking forward to seeing the wonderful digital art they will create!

Topic: Our Enterprise Learning Project gives pupils the opportunity to develop valuable life and work skills through hands-on, creative learning experiences. The project encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and independence as pupils plan, create, and manage their own small business ideas. Through a range of practical activities — from designing products to managing budgets and promoting sales — pupils explore the world of work in a meaningful and accessible way. The project helps build confidence, communication, and numeracy skills, while celebrating every learner’s strengths and achievements.

RE:  In this topic, we will learn how different religions welcome new life and celebrate beginnings. We will explore what happens when a baby is born and how faith communities show joy and love for new life. The class will also look at the nativity story.  The students will know that every religion has special ways to welcome new life and that these celebrations show love, joy, and belonging.

PE: The students will take part in PE lessons that will help them develop confidence, coordination, and teamwork. Basketball is our sport this term. Students will learn new skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting, and they will work together in small teams to build communication and cooperation.  Through these activities, students will improve their physical fitness, social skills, and self-esteem. They will also experience the joy of belonging to a team and celebrating their success together.

Out in the community:  The class go out weekly on the bus.  It gives the students safe and supported opportunities to take part in real-life experiences — from visiting local parks and shops to joining in community events and leisure activities.  These outings help children develop social skills, gain independence, and learn through hands-on experiences. Whether it’s learning to travel safely, ordering food in a café, or simply enjoying time outdoors with friends, our community sessions are all about fun, learning, and building confidence together.
