Welcome to Base 1
Welcome, families, to the start of an exciting new school year!
I'm Mrs Lamb and I'm so glad to have your child in my class and look forward to a year full of learning, growth, and fun. This year, we’ll be exploring new ideas, building strong classroom relationships, and developing important skills together. Communication and teamwork are key to our success, so please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or thoughts. I can’t wait to see all that we will accomplish as a school community!

Recent Highlights - Autumn 1
English: The aim of this unit is to help children understand the values of friendship, kindness, and sharing through exploring the story The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. The unit intends to develop pupils’ emotional literacy by encouraging them to reflect on how actions affect others and the importance of generosity and belonging. Through creative, literacy, and discussion-based activities, pupils will enhance their speaking, listening, and comprehension skills while deepening their understanding of empathy and community. The unit also aims to foster a love of reading and storytelling, inspiring pupils to express their own ideas and feelings through art, drama, and writing.
Science : Our Base 1 explorers have been having a stellar time learning all about space! This topic will develop pupils curiosity and understanding about space, the planets, and our solar system through exploration, discussion, and creative activities. The pupils have been very crafty, making their own planets, visiting the museum to discover more about the universe and even baking moon-shaped treats to learn about the different phases of the moon.
Maths: In Maths this term, we are exploring a range of exciting topics to build our confidence and problem-solving skills!
Number
We are practising counting forwards and backwards, recognising number patterns, and developing strategies for addition and subtraction. We’re also learning how to explain our thinking when solving number problems.
Shape
We are learning to name and describe 2D and 3D shapes, talk about their properties (like sides, corners, and faces), and spot shapes in the world around us. We’ll also explore position, direction, and simple symmetry.
Money
We are learning to recognise coins and notes, make different amounts in a variety of ways, and solve simple money problems involving buying items and giving change.
RE: Through creative and hands-on learning activities pupils have developed an understanding of the idea of Creation, exploring how the world and everything in it began. This topic encourages a sense of wonder, appreciation, and care for the world around them.
Learning Project:
This half term our project has been ‘Changes within living memory’.
Pupils have learnt that life changes over time and that they can find out about the past through talking to older people, looking at photographs, and comparing objects from then and now.
The highlight has to have been our Guess the baby competition!!!!!
The topic encouraged pupils to talk about past and present events in their own lives and support them in developing a sense of chronology (e.g., what happened when, how things looked before).
It has developed the language of time, such as yesterday, last year, when I was a baby, long ago and foster curiosity about the world and how people, objects, and routines have changed. (e.g., toys, transport, homes, technology).
Learning outside the classroom:
We believe that learning doesn’t just happen at desks! Learning outdoors helps children make real-life connections — counting natural objects, exploring shapes in the environment, measuring distances, and using money in real-world situations. These hands-on experiences make maths meaningful, memorable, and fun.
We also enjoy taking our learning beyond the school gates through social visits and community experiences. These trips give children valuable opportunities to build confidence, independence, and develop their social skills.
This half term we have enjoyed a visit to the World Museum in Liverpool, a trip to the pumpkin patch to choose our own pumpkins for our harvest and Halloween work and lots of social experiences to the park, the woods and cafes.

Coming Up Next Half Term - Autumn 2
English: This half term pupils will develop their phonological awareness through exploring rhyme and rhythm in a range of Julia Donaldson books . The texts will support their ability to hear, identify, and generate rhyming words, and begin transferring this knowledge into written representations through mark-making, emergent writing, simple word formation and basic sentence structures.
Science: In Science this half term pupils will explore and understand light by investigating sources of light, how light helps us to see, and what happens when light is blocked or reflected, through hands-on play and simple observations.
Maths : This half term pupils will develop a greater understanding of time. Through a range of activities pupils will be learning to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour . They will sequence events in chronological order, and use everyday time vocabulary such as before, after, morning, afternoon, and evening.
RE: In our RE lessons this half term pupils will learn the concept of Advent as a time of waiting and preparation for Christmas, and to explore the story of the birth of Jesus. Children will begin to understand why Christmas is important to Christians and reflect on the values of hope, joy, and giving to others.
Rehearsals will also be taking place for our Base 1 performance in our school Christmas show. I am sure this will bring so much fun along the way !!!!!!
Learning Project: This half term pupils will plan, design, and create products to sell at a Christmas fair, developing skills in teamwork, creativity, budgeting, and entrepreneurship. Together they will plan and organise a small business idea.

Pupils will work effectively as part of a team, sharing ideas, dividing tasks, and solving problems collaboratively.
Learning outside the classroom: Forest school this half term will encourage pupils to develop creative art ideas through hands-on experiences in the forest, using natural resources to explore texture, colour, pattern, and form, while fostering a deeper appreciation and connection with the natural world.
